Merle's Lunches Lately

In the winter I wrote a post on what I pack for Merle's lunches. Some of the lunches get eaten in their entirety, some not so much.
For whatever reason, I've realized Merle's doesn't eat meat when I pack it in her lunch. Maybe it requires more chewing than she has patience for at school or maybe it's not heated to her preferred temperature. She is also a little weird about eating around people in general (besides Mommy and Baba of course). Whatever the reason, I save myself time and money by keeping meat in breakfast and dinner and skipping it at lunchtime. Her weekday breakfast favorites include ground bison and eggs with oatmeal and baked chicken and yams with Greek yogurt for dipping. There's a much wider variety in dinner meals, but frequent favorites for Merle include turkey meatballs with whole wheat spaghetti, mini turkey burgers with corn on the cob, and pork chops with asparagus. But this post is about lunches, right?! Merle's preference is for mostly fruits and vegetables with smaller portions of carbs and protein. This time of year it is all about the berries. She also can't say no to any food that looks "cute" so I use cookie cutters whenever possible (these and these are our favorites; also pictured here). It's a little time consuming, but if she eats more at lunch time because of the cute factor, I'm all about it. Another helpful tool for packing her lunch are silicone cupcake liners. Like most kids, she loathes her food touching, so I make sure to separate out foods within the same compartment with the cupcake liners. Pictured here are a few lunches on frequent rotation for Merle's lunch (pardon the iPhone quality photos).
