DIY Jeweled Sweatshirt

I’ve been eyeing up jeweled sweatshirts for quite some time, but I couldn’t justify the price tag. I caved and bought one for Merle after being caught in a down pour (hey, she was wet, she needed it right?!) and after seeing how adorable she looked in it, I decided to make my own. It was inexpensive (roughly $10 for a basic crew neck sweatshirt from H&M plus $5 for sew-on gems from JoAnn Fabrics) and simple, although slightly time consuming. Here’s how I did it.

Before starting any sewing, practice laying out how you want the gems to look on the sweatshirt. I used Merle’s sweatshirt as inspiration. There are a few options from here. You could secure the gems down with double sided tape or fabric glue to keep them in position, use a fabric pen or chalk to outline the gems, or what I did, was take a photo of the layout and refer back to it as needed to determine where the gems should be relative to each other. Next comes the sewing.

Thread the needle and pull the thread through to create a double layer. In my experience with this project, it’s easier to start out with a long length of thread (I used about a foot at a time) that can sew on multiple gems. That way you don’t have to thread the needle every couple of minutes. Knot the two ends together when you’ve pulled out the desired length of thread.

1. Begin by inserting the needle underneath the top layer of the sweatshirt, immediately next to the edge of the first gem and pull it through to the front of the fabric.

2. Then while holding the gem in position, insert the needle through the small hole in the gem. Reinsert the needle by the exterior edge of the gem and pull the thread through the outside of the sweatshirt.

3. Repeat.

4. For a third time, insert the needle through the small hole in the gem and then pull the thread in the interior of the sweatshirt toward the second hole in the gem. Insert the needle through underside of the second hole and pull it through to the outside of the sweatshirt.

5. & 6. Repeat steps 1 through 3. Knot the thread when finished sewing a gem, repeating the process until all gems are sewn in.
