Packing Tips

Quick packing is a skill I've picked up over dozens of extended trips and apartment moves. With vacation season in full swing, I thought it would be a good time to share how I prep for packing.

1. Make a detailed list.

Well in advance of you trip, make a list of all the items you will need, being as specific as possible. Write "five pairs of underwear, the green maxi dress, mascara..." instead of just "clothes, toiletries,.." In the heat of the moment, things can be forgotten and by having a thorough checklist to go from, you'll make sure everything ends up in the bag.

2. Do laundry the day before you leave.

This serves two purposes. It ensures everything you could want to pack is clean and available to be packed. Check things off your list as you grab things from the clean pile.  When you return home, you also won't have additional housework to do :)

3. Gather up all the items before filling a bag.

This helps you get a handle on everything that needs to fit and allows you to be mindful of organization. No one likes getting to their destination with a messy bag of wrinkled clothes.

4. When in doubt, leave it out.

Pack pieces that are versatile and can be used in multiple outfits. This reduces the amount of weight you have to carry and leaves more room in your bag for potential souvenirs. If you're spending timing debating whether an item is essential to your trip, keep it at home. The importance of the trip isn't what's going in your bag anyway, it's the memories you bring home.

5. Don't forget the snacks!

Staying hydrated and well nourished during travel helps ensure you still feel fresh by the time you get to your destination. Stopping for fast food on the road is expensive and unhealthy. Save your wallet and your waistline, by packing snacks before you go, such as water, fruit, nuts, and granola bars.
